Where is Your Rest?

Christmas Poem 2022

Caesar Augustus, ruler of the Empire

Reclining on pillows of satin, brow wiped with linens,

You usher a decree to your subjects-- report and number.

Resting in ability to make men move and heed.

Yet, foretold, only a pawn,

For in the dawn, Joseph leaves with his betrothed

Registering  his Ancestry of David,

And with her, the Holy seed.

Where is your rest, O tyrant of a nation?

In political power, in subjugation?

The manipulation and fear brought,

The bombs you drop?

A True Believer fights emancipation

As refugees cross borders

And kneel in the dust of mortars.

Shepherds, ruler of the flocks

Heads lying on smoother rocks,

The sheep slumber on a clear cold night.

On watch in the fields—your rest

Broken, your bodies unclean

But to you is given a sight unseen.

The Heavens proclaim the New Born King

For all strayed, eyes closed in our dreams.

Where is your rest, O ruler of the dark?

Lurking deceiver, a wolf in sheep’s clothing

Determined to snuff out the spark.

Subtle and sneaky if not on our mark.

Spiritual warfare nears and rears

But the Heavens do battle--

Joy in victory tears; chains rattle.

Mary, O favored of God

Chosen one, as you proclaim,

My soul exalts the Lord, and my

Spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour,”

“I rest in You as I carry Your Son

Your will be done. Deliver soon.

As she straddles the beast sojourning afar,

A weary couple cannot find a room.

Where is your rest, Joseph, my servant?

For even in sleep, never deep

Your thoughts shake the bed.

You consider the facts,

Angels of dreams confirm your acts

And the Gospel is told to one so bold

As you walk the prophesy tracks.

Oh, where is your rest fathers and mothers?

Schools and bedrooms no longer safe

Bullets, pills, predators ready to take

What was once wrong now embraced;

Addiction, depression, estrangement unfaced

Sin remains the cause, fathers and mothers pause,

For Christ’s mercy we pray without haste.

Where is your rest, O little Holy child?

For from You the whole world’s unrest divides.

By Your sovereign plan, You-- the Messiah, Immanuel

Provide the peace for our lives to dwell.

“No rest for the weary,” as some may say

But God, a child named Jesus

–in His grace we are saved!

Where is your rest, O children of God?

Do you wonder and question this world—

Where is love? Is God above?

Are you bitter, uncertain,

Angry and alone? Is this really your home?

Come to the stable but kneel at the Cross

Close your eyes, rest, take heart--

Believe! Jesus Christ lights all your dark.

\John 16:33 “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.“

But God: An Intentional Love Story.

I stepped into the hospital chapel, alone.

But God? A burden pushed from every side. It weighed so heavily within my spirit, yet my body barely functioned in its numb state. A thousand pounds might fall into my lap and I wouldn't have felt it. Only one exception, my lungs ached trying to breathe.

What language did I speak?

I couldn't put words together in my mind, yet...I knew God interpreted my confusion, my desperate pleas, the anguish in every teardrop. My head hung in a sacred place where many had come before me in this same state, some knowing hope, some...maybe not. There remained nothing I could do, and everything I could do as I inhaled in pain and exhaled in promise.

I learn of my son, Tim's death.  He was so tired.

Tears of surrender and anguish moved with the fluid prayers, both conscious and underlying. Time. Stop. Rewind, so I won't forget anything. Outside, his father and others paced, did their own petitioning. He heard the words first. I did not. My husband's eyes conveyed a sudden truth no one wanted to recognize.

Let this tsunami pull back, disintegrate, evaporate as if nothing broke the dam of reality.

In that moment, no utterances surfaced, held under by the pieces of many shattered hearts. God, in all His glorious love and grace, never felt so real and so worthy of all my worship until that very moment.

Full Sail

Twelve years have passed and I am different. Different from that very second and transformed over time. All these collective moments both anchor me and set me free. Learning to find peace in both places,  the Lord God sets the course and I must trust Him.

Like the tides, faithful and true, covering up and pulling back to reveal treasures, the tide pools of tears and memory shells provide discovery and a deeper devotion...in both the wading...(the waiting) and the deep, my story.

I want to, I need to, I must voyage through Your perfect Will, Lord.

You, Lord, in Your great love for me, For Timmy, are so intentional. As I write these thoughts, pour out my praise and prayers, I press in, buckle tight the grace gift life vest. It wraps around me in perfection and comfort and I see the generous deck hands You have provided to sail along with me. They, as well, are intentional, devoted, my own miracles.

I might have stayed under the heavy tarp of despair and grief..., the grommets of regret and isolation held fast to the what ifs, the should haves, BUT GOD...

I allowed, directed my self to feel His Spirit as all the deck hands prayed, continue to pray and honor our Creator and Giver of life. I billowed up, caught by the Wind and I began to sail through the waters only You charted for me, a personal, intentional course.

I dock in beautiful Ports of Calling and walk along shores where grace ripples so gently and so amazingly. Hope unpacks the grief and restores this vessel for myself, for others.  A certain horizon awaits me, the full sail Glory of the Lord in my own return Home but until then, I will speak of, serve and worship The Lord of Promise whose Love is intentional for every one of us.

Psalm 27: 13-14
I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.Wait for the Lord; be strong and let your heart take courage; yes, wait on the Lord.

Let go, Let God
He is Lord
Grace is Amazing
Heaven is Real

Considerably Yours,
Coleene

Definitions

What is TRUTH, really?
          The things we see
Shaped in images before our eyes
A philosophy fitting in our heart
           Or is it really,
           A light in the darkness,
           An all consuming omniscience.
           God.

What is FORGIVENESS, really?
            Regret of actions past
            A humble attempt to reconnect,
An added veil to look through.
            Or is it really,
Deletion as if it never happened
            On a hard drive that never existed;
A gift we can give to ourselves.
            The Cross

What is TRANSFORMATION, really?
            A change of direction,
            An extreme make-over.
            Or is it really,
            Tangible grace,
            Sanctification in motion,
            Holy Spirit

What is LOVE, really?
           A warm and fuzzy feeling,
           A thought of intense care.
           Or is it really,
A free gift of Eternal Hope,
A passion for all of humanity,
           A baby in a manger.
           Emmanuel, God with Us.
