Remember the movie "Dumb and Dumber"?
Aston Kutcher gained more popularity with his TV show "Punk'd", an updated version of Candid Camera except Ashton played tricks on his own peers in the entertainment industry. The word "punked" now has an additional multiple meaning: to be tricked or scammed, as a joke by a friend.
Do you remember the Spaghetti Tree?
(...Couldn't find one in the garden dept. at Home Depot).
#1: The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest
1957: The respected BBC news show Panorama announced that thanks to a very mild winter and the virtual elimination of the dreaded spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. It accompanied this announcement with footage of Swiss peasants pulling strands of spaghetti down from trees. Huge numbers of viewers were taken in. Many called the BBC wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti tree. To this the BBC diplomatically replied, "place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best."
So far this year the winner of biggest fool (in my book) has to go to "Balloon Boy's Dad. (Just what kind of example was he setting here?) Although there are many others that come real close.
With all that said and done, I am sure you can think of some personal experience where you were duped and made to look like a fool, as in a practical joke or maybe you just made a wrong choice and felt the consequences of being "unwise." Either way, I hope you can recall those times and laugh at yourself, and/or use it as an object lesson for the next time or for someone else. God has quite a bit to say about foolishness and what he thinks a fool does. Let's take a look at a few:
Ecclesiastes 5: 1,3 Guard your steps as you go to the house of God, and draw near to listen rather than offer the sacrifice of fools. For the dream comes through much effort, and the voice of a fool through many words.
Ecclesiastes 9:17 The words of the wise heard in quietness are better than the shouting of a ruler among fools.
Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 14:8-9 The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way, but the folly of fools is deceit. Fools mock sin, but among the upright there is goodwill.
Proverbs 29:11 A fool always loses his temper; but a wise man holds it back
Psalms 14:1 A fool says in his heart, "There is no God."...
Romans 1:22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of the birds and four footed animals and crawling creatures.
Ephesians 5:17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
All of us at time are fools, we do and say foolish things, trust in the wrong thing, trip over our own feet. Isn't it nice to know that God is not up in heaven laughing at us but instead loves us through our blunders. When we confess, when we humble ourselves before Him and when we seek out His will, He holds out His hand, pulls us up off our backside and strengthens us to move into wisdom, leaving folly behind. That is a picture of Grace.
Proverbs 3:23: Then you will walk in your way securely, and your foot will not stumble.
